Cardiothoracic Surgery

Characteristic feature of Surgery of Kuopio Heart Center is careful quality control of surgical results. Also, quality of life is assessed for patients before operation and 6 and 12 months after operation.

Repertoire of surgery includes all modalities of adult cardiac surgery, lung surgery, surgery of esophagus and aorta of thorax other and other forms of surgery of thorax. Endovascular techniques are widely used in solving the problems of whole thoracic aorta. On yearly basis among the 700 cardiac operations are around 100 mitral plasties and 400 pure coronary on- and off-pump by-pass operations. Other cardiac operations include catheter based aortic valve and combination operations.

Cardiothoracic surgery of Kuopio Heart Center is based on collaboration with operation theatres and intensive care unit. Anesthesiologists of the Kuopio University Hospital Anesthesia Clinic are responsible for anesthesia and the maintenance of the patient's vital functions during the operations. The Intensive Care Unit provides the postoperative recovery.

After postoperative intensive care unit time the patients are treated on surgical ward of Heart Center. The surgical ward is equipped with most modern telemetry service.
