Research and Teaching
The Department of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Hand Surgery is an active education unit for those with a Bachelor's degree in medicine, and registrars in specialist training. Professors and teachers of clinical orthopaedics and nursing are in charge of the training of medical students, registrars and nurses. As the hospital is a teaching hospital, the entire staff is involved in teaching. It should also be mentioned that the University of Eastern Finland has Finland's only professorship in traumatology.
The specialist training in orthopaedics and traumatology at Kuopio University Hospital is highly regarded. Training in orthopaedics is typical master–apprentice teaching. Seven to eight future orthopaedists receive training at a time.
Kuopio musculoskeletal research is a field of extensive collaboration between orthopaedic surgeons and physicists to create a research continuum from basic science to clinical and epidemiological applications. The university hospital provides excellent facilities and large patient series to conduct high quality clinical trials in hip and knee osteoarthritis, spine, foot and shoulder disorders, and fractures. Furthermore, our academic clinic takes part in large national, multicenter RCTs.
