Neuro Center

KUH Neuro Center offers top diagnosis services and treatment for central nervous system conditions irrespective of the weekday and time. In addition to Neurology and Neurosurgery Outpatient Clinics and Inpatient Wards, the Center includes a national Epilepsy Center that performs the majority of epilepsy surgeries in Finland.

Neuro Center treats patients sent for examinations and treatment from central hospitals (Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Mikkeli, Savonlinna) in the Kuopio University Hospital area, regional hospitals (Iisalmi, Pieksämäki, Varkaus), and from other hospitals in Finland.

Acute diagnostics and treatment 24/7

KUH Neuro Center has a round-the-clock emergency, telephone, and image consultation for neurology and neurosurgery, as well as access to acute neurological intensive care. Top of the line neurological imaging, neurological intensive care, neurosurgery and neurophysiology services are available at the Neuro Center.

  • Emergency consultation on cerebrovascular disorders (cerebral infarction, intracerebral haemorrhage and subarachnoid haemorrhage), imaging, intravenous and intra-arterial treatment, surgical treatment and neurological intensive care
  • Emergency consultation on acute brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, imaging, surgical treatment, and neurological intensive care
  • Emergency diagnosis and treatment of prolonged epileptic seizures, interpretation of EEG, and monitoring readiness

Non-emergency diagnostics and treatment

Non-emergency diagnostics and treatment of neurological diseases is usually implemented in multidisciplinary treatment groups by neurologists, neurosurgeons and staff specialising in neurological diseases.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS)

The Neuro Center administers deep brain stimulation (DBS) for difficult motor disorders such as Parkinson's disease, tremor and dyskinesia.
