Many illnesses can be prevented and treated using nutrition. Specialists and therapeutic dieticians see patients on an outpatient basis at the Clinical Nutrition Unit. Based on consultations, the unit also attends to the planning and implementation of nutritional therapy for inpatients. Moreover, nutritional therapy services are sold to the municipalities in Pohjois-Savo based on a purchased services contract.
Patients are admitted to the unit on a physician's referral. The nutrition unit's services are most commonly used for the treatment of the following disorders
- Kidney diseases
- Celiac disease
- Inflammatory intestinal diseases
- Traumas and burns
- Neurological diseases and disorders
Bariatric Outpatient Clinic
The Clinical Nutrition Unit's Bariatric Outpatient Clinic treats severe and morbid obesity (BMI > 35) when adequate weight loss has not been achieved in basic health care. Treatment is available both as private visits to the doctor, and as group therapy. In addition, the unit is in charge of the preliminary assessment of patients referred for weight-loss surgery, as well as their post-operative monitoring.
Eating Disorder Clinic
The Eating Disorder Clinic operates at the unit on Tuesday afternoons. An endocrinology specialist is in charge of the operations of the clinic.
