Pregnant women who require special monitoring are attended to at the Kuopio University Hospital Women's Outpatient Clinic, which also performs antenatal screening. The Women's Acute Ward is an emergency department where women are admitted based on a referral or according to instructions from the Women's Clinic because of problems related to the pregnancy. Maternity wards care for women in labour and newborn infants, as well as women requiring monitoring during pregnancy or after delivery.

A Physician is Always Available

Approximately 2,500 children are born at Kuopio University Hospital every year. There are approximately 3,100 emergency visits to the labour ward. The hospital has a round-the-clock readiness to guarantee safe delivery in all circumstances.

  • An obstetrician and a paediatrician are available 24 hours a day.
  • Thanks to the on-call anaesthesiologists, women in labour can be guaranteed effective pain relief during delivery whenever required.
  • The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit operating next to the labour ward enables quick care of newborns even in unexpected problem situations arising during the first minutes of life.
