The surgical service unit is in charge of gastrointestinal surgery, urology and plastic surgery services, as well as the inpatient ward care of skin diseases at Kuopio University Hospital. Puijo Hospital has both outpatient clinic and surgical operations.
The majority of patients are admitted for examinations and treatment as emergency cases or as otherwise urgent cases. The unit performs approximately 3,700 surgical procedures every year, ranging from the removal of minor lumps to major cancer operations. In addition, it treats various inflammations, wounds and conditions that cause functional impairment.
In most cases, the physicians and nurses have specialised in treating specific illnesses as treatment teams, and have studied to become experts in these fields. The service unit also has many medical and nursing students studying the surgical field and the challenges presented by a patient's surgical treatment. Research is performed in all fields of surgery.
